Senator Blackburn Discusses Bitcoin’s Advantages
At the Bitcoin Policy Summit on Tuesday, consumer rights and privacy advocate U.S. Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) fielded concerns regarding bitcoin during a fireside conversation.
The senator was questioned about what about Bitcoin appeals to her given her history of promoting privacy and consumer rights. She answered,
There are so many aspects of Bitcoin that I find appealing.
First of all, she said, “When you talk about freedom and privacy, Bitcoin allows that for individuals.” She then on, “And people care about that because it’s decentralized, meaning there is no interference from the government.”
Senator Blackburn gave the example of Afghanistan, describing how some people there have “less trusting of Fiat currencies” and “less trusting of government structures.” “They are looking for something that will be a reliable and strong store of value. This is a fantastic choice for them. Individuals desire to be in charge of how their money is spent. “When you look at the facts that there is an ease of use to bitcoin, that is something else that people like,” the Tennessee legislator went on.
“Increasing the processing fees for credit cards is one of the hot issues on Capital Hill right now,” she continued. Additionally, more and more people are starting to realize how costly using credit cards is. Thus, this gives them an additional choice free from the pressure of having to pay the swipe cost.
The senator emphasized that bitcoin “is a really good solid option” and mentioned that she has “worked for years on the issues of consumer rights and consumer protection.” She said as she went on:
There will be an increasing number of transactions in your daily life where bitcoin is accepted as payment as time goes on and more people become aware of and comfortable with it.
