Spain’s First Crypto-Friendly City to Be Named Torrevieja

With over 90,000 residents, Torrevieja wants to be among the first places in Spain that accepts cryptocurrency. The city will provide incentives for embracing cryptocurrencies as a payment method and offer workshops to retailers that are interested in learning how to accept and utilize cryptocurrencies in partnership with Apymeco, its merchant organization.

Torrevieja to Promote the Adoption of Crypto

Spain’s 90,000-person city of Torrevieja is aiming to develop into a major cryptocurrency center. The local merchants organization, Apymeco, is assisting the city in revealing a multi-phase plan to turn into a crypto-friendly destination last week.

In order to facilitate the use of cryptocurrencies as a transactional tool for commerce and enable retailers to accept payments for goods and services online, the first phase of the strategy will use blockchain technology to improve the digitization of business transactions.

In order to preserve and restore Torrevieja’s green spaces, as well as to have a good impact on the environment, the second phase will be centered on sustainability. By providing funding to increase the number of IT jobs in the community, the third phase will facilitate the entry of tech enterprises into the city.

Apymeco’s president, Jorge Almarcha, said:

Since 2015, using bitcoins as payment has been accepted in Spain. But it wasn’t until today that we desired to make it more widely accepted as a form of payment for conventional, local, and ordinary business.

Almarcha added that Apymeco hopes to attract investors to Torrevieja through this program and raise awareness of the city’s advantages.

Councilor for Commerce Rosario Martínez Chazarra says the city would work with this project, providing seminars to teach the merchants how to utilize cryptocurrencies to receive payments.

Apymeco is actively enlisting retailers for this project and will develop a cooperative cryptocurrency payment system that the members will use in the association’s initial plan phase. However, a schedule for this kind of implementation is still unknown.
