Co-founder of Ethereum (ETH) Vitalik Buterin has stated that he is looking forward to “Verkle trees” being introduced to the blockchain. The amount of disk space utilized by staking nodes would significantly decrease with the incorporation of the data structure.
Buterin expressed his excitement over Verkle trees in a post on the social media platform X, stating that they will supposedly improve the Ethereum blockchain in a number of ways. The creator of Ethereum stated,
Verkle trees are something I’m truly excited about. They will make stateless validator clients available, which will improve the solo staking user experience by enabling staking nodes to operate with almost no hard disk capacity and to sync almost immediately. Excellent for light users as well.
Verkle trees, according to the information shared by the author of Ethereum, would enable the development of numerous new kinds of functionality in addition to stateless clients, saving a substantial quantity of storage space needed to run a node. In a similar blog post, he states,
Ethereum nodes can be upgraded with verkle trees, a data structure, so they can stop keeping a lot of state data without losing the capacity to validate blocks.
Notably, Verkle trees’ reduced hardware needs will enhance decentralization as well. Furthermore, the integration of the data structure will enable faster sync, enabling new nodes to join more quickly.
One user expressed excitement over the Verkle trees inclusion on Ethereum, saying that “the prospect of near-zero hard disk space requirements and almost instant syncing is a game-changer.” The digital asset community on X appeared to be looking forward to this integration. However, an update known as the “Dencun upgrade” is scheduled for Ethereum. As previously reported, developers have stated that additional work is required, thus the upgrade will not take place this year.
