Ethereum to Release Dencun Update on March 13; ‘Blobs’ to Be Introduced for Layer Two Scaling

The Dencun upgrade for the Ethereum network is scheduled to be released soon. Its goal is to greatly improve data storage and transaction efficiency by implementing EIP-4844, or “Proto-Danksharding.”

On March 13, Ethereum will undergo a significant upgrade with the launch of Dencun.

The highly awaited Dencun update is set to activate in slot 8626176 on March 13 at roughly 1:55 PM UTC, which means the Ethereum mainnet is getting ready for a big update. On February 7, the Holesky testnet saw the most recent successful test deployment. The following day, during their biweekly “Consensus Layer Meeting,” Ethereum core developers decided on the date for the mainnet release.

Ethereum Improvement Proposal 4844 (EIP-4844), also referred to as “Proto-Danksharding,” is the main driver of the hype surrounding the Dencun upgrade. By adding “blobs”—additional data spaces inside blocks—to blocks, this upgrade aims to boost data storage capacity within the Ethereum network while preserving block finality timings. By enabling more transactions within network blocks and hence lowering Layer two costs, blobs are anticipated to have a major positive impact on Ethereum’s Layer two blockchains.

Dencun’s implications go beyond Layer 2 solutions; it may even be able to provide slight rate savings for Ethereum mainnet transactions. The theory behind this is that Ethereum’s mainnet will have more capacity for transactions if special block space is set aside for Layer 2 transactions, which will increase the network’s overall efficiency.

The deadline for developers to publish their finished Ethereum clients that support the Dencun update is February 22. To ensure a seamless transition to the updated network, validators will have roughly two weeks to update their nodes with these new client versions.

Since April 2023, the blockchain has undergone major modifications, making the Dencun update more noteworthy. Ensuring the upgrade’s preparedness for the Ethereum mainnet has been made possible by the painstaking planning and testing processes, which included deployments on the Goerli and Sepolia testnets before Holesky.
